Enter ZO Skin Health, a name that has steadily gained recognition for its commitment to innovative skincare solutions. This article will delve into one of ZO Skin Health’s essentials—the Gentle Cleanser.  What sets ZO Skin Health apart, and what does their Gentle Cleanser claim to bring to your daily skincare regimen? We’ll answer these questions through uncovering the science, philosophy, and impact behind the brand and product. Plus, we’ll hear from a few dermatologists who provide their insight into the ingredients and efficacy of ZO Skin Health’s Gentle Cleanser. Let’s get started and see if this cleanser has the potential to be a new staple in your skincare routine!  What is ZO Skin Health?  ZO Skin Health is a trailblazing brand at the forefront of the skincare industry, founded by Dr. Zein Obagi, a world-renowned dermatologist. Driven by a passion for advancing skin health science, ZO Skin Health is dedicated to providing comprehensive skincare solutions that bridge the gap between therapeutic treatments and daily care. The brand’s philosophy revolves around the concept of “creating and maintaining healthy skin for life,” an ethos that has become synonymous with ZO Skin Health’s mission. At its core, ZO Skin Health is committed to pushing the boundaries of skincare innovation, with a focus on science-backed solutions that deliver tangible results. The brand’s approach is rooted in a comprehensive understanding of the skin’s biology and physiology, allowing for the development of products that address a spectrum of skin concerns. ZO Skin Health emphasizes the importance of customized skincare regimens, recognizing that each individual’s skin is unique and requires tailored care. A cornerstone of ZO Skin Health’s methodology is the belief that truly transformative skincare involves a continuum, spanning therapeutic treatments provided by skincare professionals to at-home maintenance. This holistic approach is reflected in the brand’s product range, designed to support users at every stage of their skincare journey. From cutting-edge formulations to meticulous attention to detail, ZO Skin Health strives to redefine the standard for effective and results-driven skincare. What is the Gentle Cleanser?  The ZO Skin Health Gentle Cleanser is a daily face wash for all skin types, developed to deeply clean your skin and remove oil, makeup, and other impurities. Like the name suggests, it’s a gentle cleanser with a silky gel formulation, leaving your skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. It’s a part of the brand’s Getting Skin Ready line, a collection of basic skincare products designed to bring skin back to its most healthy, balanced state.  ZO Skin Health recommends using the cleanser in both the mornings and nights, and massaging a small amount on your damp face and neck as the first step in your skincare routine before any serums or moisturizers. At night, it can serve as your makeup remover in addition to cleansing.  The cleanser is $49 for the full size option (200 mL), or $20 for the travel size (60 mL).  How Does It Differ From Other ZO Skin Products? While ZO Skin Health offers a variety of products for different skincare needs, the Gentle Cleanser stands out due to its universal appeal and mild formulation. Unlike the vitamin C cleanser or the enzyme powder cleanser, which target specific skin concerns such as brightening or exfoliating, the Gentle Cleanser is suitable for all skin types. It’s a versatile product within the ZO Products range, making it an ideal option for those who seek simplicity and efficacy in their cleansing routine. Who Can Benefit from This Cleanser? One of the most remarkable aspects of the ZO Skin Health Gentle Cleanser is its broad applicability. Our team of 5 tried the cleanser, and we each had a great experience despite the differences in our skin health. Whether you have dry skin, oily skin, or a combination complexion, this product caters to your needs. It is perfect for individuals looking to clean and refresh their skin without inducing dryness or irritation. Those struggling with acne will find that this cleanser helps to remove impurities efficiently, contributing to clearer skin over time. Potential Side Effects While the ZO Skin Health Gentle Cleanser is designed to be mild, it’s essential to be aware of potential side effects. Some users might experience slight tingling upon application, which usually subsides quickly. If you have extremely sensitive skin, you may want to perform a patch test before using it on your entire face. Overall, customer reviews highlight a favorable tolerance profile with very few adverse reactions reported. What a Dermatologist Thinks  What do skin experts think about the ZO Skin Health Gentle Cleanser? The dermatologists we spoke to noted a few things to consider when deciding whether to give the cleanser a try.  “While there is nothing harmful in their ingredients list that I am aware of, it is not a product that I would recommend for my patients with multiple allergies,” says Dr. Ali Al-Haseni, MD. “The main reason for saying this is that it has both a fragrance and a dye. Two chemicals that I advise my patients with sensitive skin to avoid in their cleansers to reduce the possibility of further skin irritation.” Similarly, Dr. Kelley Redbord, MD noted that many of the ingredients in the formula, including citronellol, hexyl cinnamal, limonene, linalool, camellia sinensis leaf extract, and fragrance/parfum, have the potential for allergy or irritation, though they’re “generally well tolerated”.  Finally, Redbord flagged that it was positive to see that the extracts in the product are antioxidants. Is the ZO Skin Health Gentle Cleanser For You? With its fusion of advanced technology, botanical elements, and a commitment to overall skin well-being, the Gentle Cleanser encapsulates ZO Skin Health’s philosophy—creating and maintaining healthy skin for life. Finding a skincare routine that works for your unique skin is a personal journey. While the ZO Skin Health Gentle Cleanser might not be for everyone, it could be

how mom skin changes after 40

A Mom’s Guide on How Skin Changes During Your 30s and 40s

We all know it, moms typically prioritize taking care of their families over their own self-care. But when we see how mom skin changes after 40, we start to think maybe we should pay attention. As we enter our 30s and 40s, the days when we’re so busy taking proper care of everyone else and not getting a chance to drink enough water or have a skincare routine eventually start catching up with us. Slap on natural body changes you already go through, you might be starting to notice wrinkles, age spots, and fine lines earlier than you expected.  Need some tips on the skin concerns you’re noticing? We’ve got all that and more. From how your skin changes during your 30s and 40s to tips for aging skin–it’s time to take a break from your mom duties (only for a minute) and talk about skincare. Let’s get into it. Why Does Your Skin Change As You Get Older? With the extra push from vitamin C, collagen is the building block of our skin. One of collagens’ main jobs is to replace dead skin cells and provide strength and elasticity to our beautiful outer shell. When you hit your mid-twenties, collagen production starts to decline. The result? Wrinkles, dullness, and less-bountiful skin. On top of that big collagen drop? “Genetics, hormones, nutrition choices, sun exposure, our tendency for stress, and how well we sleep all affect how our skin ages. And let’s not forget about gravity,” says Dr. Brooke Jeffy, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of btwn skincare. How Hormones Affect Skin  When it comes to how mom skin changes after 40, hormones play a big role. Estrogen is an important hormone for women. It plays a key role in puberty, fertility, emotional changes, and pregnancy. Plus, estrogen also affects your skin health. It helps with collagen production, elasticity, and moisture of your skin–thank you estrogen for the bouncy glowing skin.  But you guessed it. As we age, hormonal changes have a significant impact on our skin. After 30, women begin to experience a decrease in estrogen production. Low estrogen leads to dryness, thinning skin & barrier function, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dr. Geeta Yadav, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of FACET Dermatology, adds another spin to this. “Especially if you’ve discontinued birth control in this time frame, [you will notice] drier and more sensitive skin than you’ve experienced in the past, and possibly even acne,” says Yadav. Common Skin Issues After 30 Because collagen starts to decline in your mid-20s, moms usually start to notice signs of aging in their 30s. After things like years of breastfeeding, sleepless nights and always being on the go chasing around toddlers–it’s normal to start noticing things you’ve never seen before in the mirror when you slow down a bit.  Here are some common skin issues you might notice after 30, noted by Doctors Yadav and Jeffy: Common Skin Issues After 40 Quickly fast forward to 40 and your skin changes even more. “This is when skin laxity becomes even more noticeable, with some patients experiencing jowling or deeper folds around the nose and mouth,” says Yadav. At 40, many women will enter into perimenopause–a transitional period before menopause–which also contributes to increased skin issues. Dermatologists Yadav and Jeffy list the following skin issues after 40: Skin Care Tips for Aging Skin With all the inevitable skin changes in your 30s and 40s, you might be wondering if there’s anything you can do to support this aging skin. You’re noticing more wrinkles, fine lines, and dull skin–there’s got to be something you can do, right? Luckily we’ve got all the skin care tips from the experts right here. 1. Above all, use sunscreen The best way to take care of your skin? Wearing quality sunscreen. “Even if you were lax about SPF usage in your teens and twenties, there’s no reason to continue with a bad habit,” says Yadav. Sun damage will accelerate skin aging and even worse, put you at risk for skin cancer. First and foremost, sunscreen is the most important step to support your new skincare routine. UV radiation can accelerate the aging process, leading to age spots, sun spots, and fine lines. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 should be a staple in your skincare routine, even on cloudy days. 2. Incorporate a retinoid into your skincare routine Whether it’s an over-the-counter retinol from a drugstore, a cream from your favorite beauty brand, or a prescription-strength serum from your dermatologist, retinol will do the trick. Yadav even says that it can do everything from promoting new collagen and cellular turnover to combating and preventing acne. 3. Minimize stress Easier said than done–but it is something you should always strive for. Stress is a big factor in the health and beauty of our skin. “Stress causes inflammation in the body, and systemic, chronic inflammation is very unhealthy–your skin can’t heal or regenerate itself as rapidly and your oil production is negatively affected, causing congestion and breakouts,” notes Yadav. Finding stress-reducing activities like yoga, meditation, walking outside, working out or even a nice warm bath can go a long way in your aging skin journey. Lifestyle factors like smoking and stress can negatively impact your skin. Quitting smoking, managing stress, and getting regular exercise can improve blood flow and support healthy skin. A healthy lifestyle contributes to a more youthful complexion. 4. Stay Hydrated with Hyaluronic Acid As you age, skin changes like fine lines and dry skin become more noticeable. Hyaluronic acid is a powerhouse ingredient that helps retain moisture, giving your skin a plump and hydrated look. Add a hyaluronic acid serum to your skincare routine for the best results. 5. Boost Collagen Production   Collagen production naturally decreases with age, leading to skin laxity and fine lines. Incorporate products that stimulate collagen, like those containing retinoids or peptides, to help maintain your skin’s firmness and elasticity. Collagen supplements can also support this process from within. 6. Incorporate Vitamin

are facials good for your skin

Are Facials Good for Your Skin? (Answered by a Dermatologist & Aesthetician)

Many women swear by facial treatments–but are facials good for your skin? We’ve looked everywhere and the response seems to be a mixed bag. But women want answers. So we’ve gathered the best of the best and talked to an award-winning dermatologist and celebrity aesthetician to give you the facts. Let’s get into it. Are Facials Good for Your Skin? In general, yes, facials are a great way to not only clean your skin but to remove dead skin cells and toxins. After a facial, your skin should look and feel much cleaner. Facials can also help prevent acne and blackheads. Keep reading to learn more about the benefits of getting a facial, the potential risks, and what you should know before you book your facial. What Is a Facial? A facial is a beauty treatment designed to give your face a deep cleanse, exfoliate and hydrate skin with specialized creams and serums. They are traditionally used to improve the overall look and feel of your skin. But many women also rely on this method for help with other things such as reducing excess oil, achieving clear skin, fading wrinkles, and helping with acne. Facials are typically performed in a spa by an aesthetician or sometimes in a clinic by a dermatologist. Dr. Erum Ilyas, MD, MBE, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York, notes that most facials are comprised of a series of steps that include: There are many different kinds of facials to choose from. From the classic facial and dermaplane to hydra and microdermabrasion facials–there are a variety of options to pick from based on your specific needs. We’ll dive into the most popular choices later in this article.  Benefits of Facials Here’s a controversial topic. Are there truly any benefits from facials? Many women report healthy, vibrant and glowing skin following a facial treatment. “Facials can also help address specific concerns like acne or pigmentation,” says Joshua Ross, a celebrity aesthetician and founder of SkinLab in Manhattan Beach, California. But the benefits all depend on your skin type and the facial you choose. On the other hand, Dr. Ilyas told us that facials are actually a very temporary treatment. The moisture and exfoliation women experience immediately after unfortunately does not last forever. So what’s the known benefit of a facial then? It seems to be the relaxation component and self-care aspect of taking time for yourself to get pampered. Here’s a complete list of ways facials can be beneficial: 1. Healthy Skin One of the best benefits of getting a facial treatment is achieving and maintaining healthy skin. Whether you have dry skin, oily skin, combination skin, or normal skin, regular facials can work wonders. 2. Deep Cleansing A good facial involves deep cleansing of your skin. This helps to remove excess oil, buildup of dead skin cells, and unclog pores. For those with oily skin, this is particularly beneficial as it reduces the chances of acne and breakouts. 3. Improves Skin Texture Facials can also improve the texture of your skin. By exfoliating dead cells, your skin’s surface becomes smoother and softer. 4. Even Skin Tone Do you struggle with dark spots, acne marks, or uneven skin tone? Professional facials, especially those using vitamin C or chemical peels, can help to lighten dark spots and create a more even complexion. 5. Youthful Appearance As we age, our skin naturally loses collagen, leading to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Regular facials can help to boost collagen production, which contributes to a more youthful-looking skin. 6. Reduces Appearance of Fine Lines If you’re concerned about the aging process, facials can be an excellent way to address this. Some facials, like lymphatic facials or those using hyaluronic acid, focus on reducing the appearance of fine lines. 7. Boosts Collagen Development Collagen development is crucial for maintaining firm and plump skin. Certain types of facials, such as oxygen facials or those with hyaluronic acid, can boost collagen development. 8. Clears Skin Issues Whether it’s acne-prone skin, dry areas, or excess oil, facials can target specific skin issues. For acne-prone skin, facials with salicylic acid peels can be beneficial in clearing out pores. 9. Addresses Specific Skin Concerns One of the best things about facials is that they can be tailored to your specific skin type and concerns. Whether you have sensitive skin, suffer from skin conditions, or have specific skin concerns, there’s a type of facial for you. 10. Improves Blood Circulation A good facial massage isn’t just relaxing; it also improves blood circulation. This means more oxygen and nutrients are delivered to your skin’s cells, promoting healthier skin. 11. Lymphatic Drainage Lymphatic facials or lymphatic massages are great for promoting lymphatic drainage. This helps to reduce puffiness, especially around the eyes, and detoxify the skin. 12. Relieves Psychological Distress Taking care of your skin isn’t just about the physical benefits; it can also have psychological benefits. Facials can be a relaxing and therapeutic experience, reducing stress and promoting overall well-being. 13. Prevents Sun Damage Sun damage can lead to premature aging and skin issues. Some facials, especially those with light therapy or specific skincare products, can help to repair and prevent sun damage. 14. Enhances Skincare Routine Facials aren’t a replacement for your daily skincare routine but rather a complement to it. They can enhance the effectiveness of your skincare products by ensuring they penetrate deeper into the skin. 15. Promotes Skin Rejuvenation Over time, our skin can become dull and tired-looking. Facials promote skin rejuvenation by stimulating cell turnover and revealing fresh, glowing skin. 16. Tailored Skincare Products After a facial, skincare professionals often recommend products tailored to your skin’s needs. This ensures you’re using the best treatments for your skin type and concerns. 17. Saves Time and Money While it may seem like facials cost a lot of money, they can actually save you money in the long run. By maintaining healthy skin, you may reduce the need for expensive skincare products or treatments.

A Therapist Explains Why Vacation Is A Necessity, Not a Luxury

Today, Americans are working more hours and taking less vacation time than ever before. However, vacation is a necessity — not a luxury — that prevents burnout and optimizes productivity. In today’s article, Rane Wallace, MS, LPC, LCDC, SAP, of Fort Wellness Counseling reveals the importance of taking vacation days for both your physical and mental well-being.  What Does A Necessity and Not A Luxury Mean?  Many employers offer paid time off (PTO)—or even unlimited PTO— as a job perk. Unfortunately, doing so turns it into a commodity by which jobs are compared, leveraged, and chosen. However, it shouldn’t be this way. Ample studies have shown us that taking time away from work has both physical and mental health benefits. Keep scrolling to discover what those are.  Benefits Of Vacation Days Taking vacation days is necessary for both our physical and mental well-being. Here are some reasons why vacation is a necessity, not a luxury: Improves Physical Health Wallace tells us that stress contributes to heart disease and blood pressure. One study found that women who vacationed once every six years — or less — were almost eight times more likely to develop coronary heart disease or have a heart attack compared to those who vacationed at least twice per year.  Another study found that those who vacationed more frequently were less likely to meet the criteria for a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome, which is a combination of health issues including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess belly fat, and abnormal cholesterol levels.  Boosts Mental Health Neuroscientists have found that chronic stress alters one’s brain structure. It also increases your risk of anxiety and depression. However, taking a vacation gives people time to recharge their batteries, allowing the mind to calm and stressful feelings to dissipate. “Not only do they remove you from the stressful work environment,” says Wallace. “But vacations also add to your self-care routine, decreasing anxiety and helping you avoid burnout.”  Strengthens Cognitive Flexibility “Cognitive flexibility is the ability to appropriately adjust one’s behavior according to a changing environment,” says Wallace. “Vacations strengthen cognitive flexibility by taking us out of our day-to-day routine.” A greater degree of cognitive flexibility may contribute to a reduced risk of chronic diseases and obesity. Increases Mental Motivation Studies reveal that chronic stress makes it difficult to achieve certain tasks and causes memory problems. However, “adding a vacation to the calendar can provide a mental boost and motivation,” says Wallace. In a way, think of making vacation decisions as a way of giving your brain an oil change.  Supports Sleep Restless nights are a common problem, and they often stem from having too much on your mind. However, research indicates that taking time off work interrupts the habits that disrupt sleep (like working late at night or scrolling before bed). One study confirmed that after taking two to three nights of vacation, participants averaged an hour more of quality sleep and experienced an 80% improvement in reaction time. When they returned home, they were still sleeping an hour longer, and their reaction time remained 30% to 40% higher than before.  Increases Mindfulness Breaking up your usual routine can make you feel more stimulated and present. “Taking a vacation provides greater opportunity for rest and better sleep,” says Wallace. “It also gives your mind a chance to recalibrate and focus on the bigger picture. I typically go to the beach once per year, and I love to spend some time on the sand thinking about future goals and how things are going in life.”  Reduces Stress Stress increases the levels of certain hormones, notably cortisol and adrenaline. And while this is helpful in emergencies (by triggering the fight or flight response), chronic stress levels are detrimental to one’s health. A study from the American Psychological Association confirmed that taking time off reduces stress by removing people from the activities, routines, and environments associated with anxiety.  If you plan on vacationing to the beach or mountains, another scientific study found that spending at least 120 minutes per week in natural environments supports overall health and well-being.  When Should I Take a Vacation? “Vacations have a lot of mental health benefits that include helping you be happier and healthier, reducing stress, improving sleep, improving self-care and resilience, connecting socially, and decreasing burnout,” says Wallace. And most experts agree that taking at least two vacations per year can do wonders for both physical and mental health. Therefore, we recommend taking your next vacation as soon as possible. Anastasia Beverly Hills Highlighter Review (2023)

Anastasia Beverly Hills is a global beauty brand whose products are beloved by many for their effortless, Hollywood Glam finish. While Anastasia Beverly Hills is best known for creating and shaping the brow industry (both literally and figuratively), it offers a full selection of cult-favorite makeup products.  While every Anastasia Beverly Hills product is in a class of its own for its creamy contours and shimmery shades, one product in particular caught our eye. And that’s why today’s article features a comprehensive Anastasia Beverly Hills highlighter review. Keep reading to learn what Anastasia Beverly Hill’s Iced Out Highlighter does, what it doesn’t do, and whether or not it deserves a spot on your makeup shelf.  What is Anastasia Beverly Hills?  For those who might not know, Anastasia Soare invented the brow industry in 1997 with the launch of her patented Golden Ratio® eyebrow shaping method. And just three years later, she developed beauty’s first line of eyebrow makeup.  Over the last 25 years, Anastasia Beverly Hills has flourished into a global beauty brand with a wide variety of products that are beloved by many. Every product is designed to deliver gorgeous, professional-level results – regardless of the user’s makeup experience.  Anastasia Beverly Hills Iced Out Highlighter Anastasia Beverly Hills Iced Out Highlighter is a moderately warm-toned highlighter that is supposed to be universally flattering and provide skin luminosity. It’s designed to have a smooth finish, and the ultra-light beam effect is supposed to bring radiance to the skin.  Anastasia Beverly Hills Highlighter Claims As we mentioned, this icy, white-gold highlighter claims to be universally flattering. Combining a smooth finish with an ultra-beam effect, it claims to create a “lit from within radiance.” And because it delivers buildable intensity, it promises to amplify beautiful skin and deliver “a full, icy strobing effect.”  Not only that, but Anastasia’s highlighter promises to feel like a second skin while delivering a multi-dimensional wet-effect shine. And if you didn’t already know, the latter is supposed to combine the high reflectivity of liquid with the weightlessness of a powder.  What We Think So, does the Anastasia Beverly Hills Iced Out Highlighter deliver on its promises? Most reviewers tend to think so.  Instead of offering a solid color base, Anastasia’s highlighter has more of a glowing effect. And while you’d expect an icy white or silver highlighter, the warm, golden color actually has a tint of green. It also shimmers differently depending on how the light hits.  Users report the highlighter’s texture as being soft to the touch, moderately dense, and consistent with what you’d imagine a gel-powder hybrid formula to be. Generally, it applies beautifully to bare skin, and beauty bloggers report it melting into the skin as it blends. The result? A smooth sheen that doesn’t emphasize the skin’s natural texture or pores.  As promised, Anastasia Beverly Hills Iced Out Highlighter is, in fact, easily buildable. And it wears for about seven to eight hours before fading.  Anastasia Beverly Hills Highlighter Dupes While the Anastasia Beverly Hills Iced Out Highlighter isn’t too expensive ($34 for 0.31oz), there are some additional, high-quality dupes on the market: NARS Albatross Highlighter This moderately warm-toned, light gold powder is designed to deliver a frosty finish. The silky, lightweight highlighting powder supposedly melts into the skin for a dewy finish. And the satin-soft, micro-spherical powder is designed to layer evenly and weightlessly on all skin tones.  Purchase the NARS Albatross Highlighter for $38.  Tom Ford Shade and Illuminating Highlighting Duo in Nude Light Infused with vitamin E, the Tom Ford Shade and Illuminating Highlighting Duo uses fine, iridescent pearls to optically lift and define facial architecture like a liquid highlighter. Additionally, it offers buildable radiance and dimension.  Purchase the Tom Ford Shade and Illuminating Highlighting Duo for $90.  Italia Deluxe Glo Glam Baked Illuminating Highlighter Shimmer Bronze This highlighter aims to create a natural glow by filtering out harsh light and refining the skin’s appearance. And just like the Anastasia Beverly Hills highlighter, it’s buildable, universally flattering, cruelty-free, and it delivers a multi-dimensional shine.  Purchase the Italia Deluxe Glo Glam Baked Illuminating Highlighter Shimmer Bronze for $13.  Anastasia Beverly Hills Highlighter Review As you might have guessed, the Anastasia Beverly Hills Highlighter is beloved by many. And hopefully, after reading this Anastasia Beverly Hills highlighter review, you can see why. With buildable, dewy, shimmery coverage, this popular highlighter is a beautiful option for all skin types. Head to your local beauty supply store (or trusty Sephora) to buy yours.

The Best Lip Balms For All Kinds of Moms, Recommended By Derms

For many of us, cold air and chilly wind means chapped lips. And with winter weather on the horizon, it’s nice to have some dermatologist-approved lip balms in your back pocket (or purse, for that matter).  If you’re unsure where to start, we’ve rounded up the best lip balms for women in today’s article. Keep scrolling to discover what to look for in a lip balm, as well as the best options on the market.  Why Lip Balm Is Important in the Winter  We’re used to bundling up against winds and colder weather. But far too often, we forget to protect our mouths. Our lips are a special type of skin that’s incredibly thin and delicate, and they dry out ten times faster than the skin on the rest of our faces. Therefore, it’s important to give them a little extra protection amid colder temperatures and gusty winds.  What to Look For in a Lip Balm To prevent dry, cracked lips in the winter, you need to pay special attention to what you put on your lips. (And unfortunately, any old gas station chapstick probably isn’t going to cut it.) Here’s what to look for in lip balms for cracked lips:  Is It Ointment-Based When browsing the pharmacy aisles, look for a lip balm that is ointment-based and contains petrolatum, essential oils, or glycerin. These ingredients lock in moisture and help heal the cracks in your lips.  Doesn’t Contain Camphor, Eucalyptus, or Menthol While camphor, eucalyptus, and menthol might initially feel soothing, they’ll dry out your lips in the long run. More often than not, using lip balms containing these ingredients makes chapped lips even worse.  Has Sunscreen  Another important ingredient in lip balms for women is sunscreen. Despite colder temperatures, lips can still burn in the winter. And because our lips are more susceptible to sunburn than the rest of our faces, we recommend investing in a lip balm that contains SPF.  17 Best Lip Balms for Women with Dry, Chapped Lips Now that you know what to look for in a lip balm — and what to avoid — here are the 17 best lip balms for dry lips:  Best Overall: Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF This is one of the best lip balms for women because it contains moisturizing emollients, soothing antioxidants, and SPF to protect lips from harmful UV rays. 2024’s 8 Best Pimple Patch Brands To Finally Get Rid Of Mom Acne

If you thought acne was something you’d only have to deal with as a teenager, only to still be getting pimples well into adulthood, you’re not alone. Somewhere between 12 to 22% of American adult women struggle with acne, compared to only 3% of adult men. Much research supports the fact that women tend to break out during pregnancy due to hormonal changes. Luckily, anti-acne technologies have come a long way, and many ways exist to combat those pesky zits. One of those ways is the pimple patch. What is a pimple patch, and what does it do? We answer these questions and round up 8 of the best pimple patch brands of 2024.  What are Pimple Patches?  Pimple patches (also known as acne stickers) are hailed as a skincare revolution and are an essential tool in busy moms’ arsenals for combatting pesky post-motherhood breakouts. These thin, discreet stickers are designed to be a spot treatment, targeting and treating individual blemishes with precision and efficacy. Crafted with hydrocolloid technology, pimple patches create a protective yet breathable barrier over the blemish. This barrier absorbs excess oil, fluids, and impurities from the pimple, promoting faster healing while preventing further infection or irritation. You can apply a patch on a clean and dry pimple and let it work its magic throughout the day or overnight. What sets pimple patches apart is their convenience and inconspicuous nature. Whether you’re changing diapers, attending parent-teacher meetings, or enjoying family time, an invisible pimple patch works tirelessly beneath the surface, allowing you to face the world with confidence. Benefits of Pimple Patches Our Best Pimple Patches Best for: Hormonal acne The ZitSticka Killa Kit stands out as an innovative solution in the realm of acne care. Specifically designed for those dealing with stubborn hormonal acne, this kit offers a targeted approach to tackle even the most deep-rooted blemishes. The Killa Kit combines two key components: cleansing swabs infused with exfoliating ingredients and micro-darts infused with potent active compounds like salicylic acid, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide. These micro-darts are painlessly applied to the blemish, allowing the active ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin, addressing the issue at its source. The kit’s effectiveness lies in its ability to deliver potent ingredients directly to the heart of the blemish, promoting rapid healing and minimizing scarring. Best for: Preventing scars The Mighty Patch Original is a cult favorite pimple patch, renowned for effectively addressing zits while also being a valuable tool in preventing scarring. These medical-grade hydrocolloid patches are discreet yet powerful, and while they won’t do much for more inflammatory breakouts, they cater perfectly to whiteheads, blackheads, and smaller blemishes with precision.  Versatile for a wide array of skin types, the Mighty Patch Original adheres comfortably, working by absorbing excess oils from the blemish. This approach not only accelerates the healing process, but also reduces the risk of scarring. Plus, its matte, ultra-thin composition ensures you can confidently wear it throughout the day without drawing extra attention to your pimple. Best for: Fast-acting relief The Peace Out Acne Healing Dots contain both hydrocolloid and salicylic acid, which make them extra effective at removing oil from clogged pores. The ingredients list also includes aloe vera extract, countering the acne-fighting actives with something more soothing and anti-inflammatory. They come in packs of 20 or 60, and will leave you with clear skin without any redness or irritation. In addition to the aloe vera, these patches are extra gentle because the salicylic acid is encapsulated. This makes the salicylic acid more effective and protects your skin barrier to minimize dryness.  But where this product really shines is in just how quickly the patches work. In a consumer study, 91% of participants said their blemish was less red, less uncomfortable, and significantly less annoying within 6 hours of applying the patch.  Best for: Cystic acne When your pimples are big and deep (as is often the case with cystic acne), you’ll want to go for the PanOxyl PM Overnight Spot Patches, which are thicker than your average pimple patch. They can absorb more fluids, plus offer your bigger blemishes extra protection. For best results, put one on before going to sleep and leave it overnight, allowing the patch plenty of time to heal your peskiest blemishes. We also love this product because it’s free of latex, parabens, fragrances, sulfates, dyes, and fragrances, making it a safe choice for sensitive skin or those with allergies to any of these ingredients.  Best for: Fun! Like most pimple patches, the Starface Hydro Stars are formulated with hydrocolloid, designed to absorb fluid and reduce the appearance of inflammation. While they deliver on this promise, what really sets this product apart is the cuteness of the patches and packaging! The patches are yellow and shaped like stars, making them a fun and quirky addition to your look if you want to wear a patch when you’re out and would rather make a statement than be discreet. And they come in a refillable big yellow compact with a mirror inside, perfect to throw in your purse. Plus, the star shape is more than just cute–it serves a purpose. They’re designed to really stick, and their tiny arms can contour to parts of your face that might be tricky for circular patches, like the corners of your nose or sides of your lips.  Best for: Oily skin Made in Korea, the Good Light Luna Pimple Patches are clinically proven to shrink your blemishes, leaving behind clear, smooth skin. They’re also a green pick, as they’re attached to rippable PET plastic, a completely recyclable material. Reviews of these patches reveal that they really stick, and can withstand stomach sleeping, running around all day, or applying sunscreen or makeup. They’re translucent and discreet, so no worries about drawing attention to your zits if you’re trying to keep a low profile. Plus, if you’re looking for extra healing, Good Light offers a set that pairs these patches with their nourishing New Moon Balm,

Ways To Help You Avoid Mom Burnout & Improve Your Quality Of Life

Ever had one of those days? When you wake up thirty minutes past your alarm… Your partner is out of town… The baby is crying… Your toddler spilled chocolate milk on their only clean school uniform… You forgot to switch the laundry (so your clothes smell a bit too mildewy)… And you forgot about the dentist appointment you’re supposed to be at, like, now…  …Trust us, we’ve all been there.  Whether she realizes it or not, every mom carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. And therefore, it’s incredibly easy to get burnt out. Many parents grappled with burnout during the pandemic. However, a recent survey revealed that 66% of working parents still feel burnt out, and — news flash — moms were at the top of that list.  Developing a self-care routine for avoiding burnout is a great way to ensure you’re being the best mom you can be. If you need help getting started, keep scrolling for our top self-care tips for moms.  What Is Mom Burnout? Essentially, mom burnout is a chronic state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion. It occurs whenever ongoing stress drains a mother’s energetic resources, and it’s exceedingly high in moms with full-time careers or without a co-parent. Unfortunately, moms who feel burnt out have an increased risk of mental health problems and familial or relational conflicts, which can diminish their overall well-being.  Symptoms of Mom Burnout Because every mother is unique, symptoms of mom burnout vary from person to person. Generally, they include:  Self-Care Tips for Moms Want to avoid mom burnout? Here are some ways to cultivate self-care for busy moms:  Prioritize Sleep When life gets busy, sleep is usually the first thing we sacrifice. However, research proves time and time again that sleep is essential to both our physical and mental well-being. Not only does it boost our mood, but adequate sleep improves our brain performance and heals our bodies. Not to mention, sleep deprivation increases the risk of many chronic health problems (ranging from heart disease and stroke to obesity and dementia).  If you’re struggling to fall or stay asleep, try optimizing your nighttime routine using these tactics. Get Some Exercise  Regular exercise is one of the best mom self-care hacks. That’s because physical activity reduces the body’s stress hormones (like adrenaline and cortisol) and releases endorphins – which are the body’s natural painkillers and mood boosters. Find a Support System Social support impacts a mother’s health in a multitude of ways. For mothers who feel as though they aren’t in control of their lives (which is a symptom of burnout), social networks can reduce stress and other mental health problems. As a result, moms act more positively towards their children.  Additionally, social relationships protect a mother’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being, as they buffer stressors, reduce psychological distress, eliminate social isolation, and minimize depression and anxiety. Moms who don’t have a social support system are at a higher risk of developing mood and anxiety disorders. Consider a Technology Detox One study tied social media use to decreased, disrupted, and delayed sleep – which is associated with depression, memory loss, and poor academic performance. Additionally, social media breeds comparison culture, and seeking validation from the internet often replaces the meaningful connections moms could otherwise make in real life. Therefore, research has confirmed that limiting social media decreases feelings of depression and loneliness.  Know Your Risk Factors Moms who live in individualistic cultures — rather than collective — are more likely to suffer from mom burnout. So are low-income moms and those who are compensated for professional work done outside the home. However, by knowing their risk factors (or triggers), moms can readily identify what they’re feeling and experiencing, which can foster positive change.  Eat Well Eating a healthy diet of nutrient-dense foods — like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains — provides the fuel for exercise, reduces inflammation, and minimizes your risk of chronic diseases.  Additionally, the foods we consume directly affect our mental well-being, as over 90% of our serotonin is produced by our gut bacteria. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that boosts mood, cognition, and memory, and low serotonin levels have been linked to depressive feelings, sadness, and fatigue.  Therefore, moms should fuel their guts with prebiotics (fruit, vegetables, and whole grains) and probiotics (fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, miso, tempeh, kombucha, gouda cheese, pickled vegetables, and cottage cheese) to boost serotonin levels.  Speak With a Therapist Going to therapy for burnout is a great form of mom self-care. Not only are therapists impartial and easy to talk to, but they can provide tools to cope with the stressors of parenthood. Remember that you don’t have to wait until you have a “real problem” to visit a therapist. Even regular, monthly check-ins are fantastic ways to clear your mind and refocus on what matters to you.  Set Goals and Priorities As much as we’d like to, it’s impossible to do it all. And to avoid burning out, moms need to differentiate urgent tasks from those that can wait. Every mom should learn how to say “no” when she needs to. And at the end of the day, remember to focus on all that you’ve accomplished instead of everything you still need to do.  Spend Time in Nature Scientific studies show that regular walks through nature improve mental health. In addition, grounding — which involves doing things that electrically connect you to the Earth (like walking barefoot through the grass) — has been shown to improve sleep, reduce pain, and combat stress.  Journal to Track Your Mood Journaling is a phenomenal opportunity to step back and reflect on the day, your accomplishments, and your areas of imperfection. In this way, it allows moms to become mindful observers of their own lives and family dynamics, and it helps them identify patterns that could prevent future burnout. Additionally, this form of emotional mom self-care sets an excellent example for children.  Explore Mindful Parenting Mindful parenting is a technique that

how to stay energized during your cycle

Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle and Improving Your Energy Levels

Ever wondered why you might feel energized one week and sluggish the next? If you’re menstruating, there is a physiological explanation for this. Hormonal shifts impact the way women feel throughout their menstrual cycle. And syncing your lifestyle and diet habits to your cycle — a practice known as cycle syncing — is a phenomenal way to stay balanced and energized. If you’re interested in learning more about hormonal fluctuations, cycle syncing, and how to stay energized during your cycle, read on. Today’s article covers everything you need to know.  Menstrual Cycle Phases As you probably already know, the menstrual cycle prepares a woman’s body for pregnancy. It consists of four phases, the full cycle length being a 28-day period. Each phase of your cycle is outlined below:  Menstruation Menstruation is more commonly known as a period. This menstrual phase begins when the egg from your previous cycle isn’t fertilized, and your estrogen and progesterone levels drop as a result. Because the thickened uterus lining — which supports pregnancy — isn’t needed, it sheds through the vagina. And a combination of blood, mucus, and uterus tissue is released.  Follicular Phase The next menstrual cycle phase is the follicular phase. Technically, the follicular phase begins the first day of your period (so there is some overlap with menstruation) and lasts until ovulation (about 13-14 days).  The follicular phase begins when the hypothalamus signals your pituitary gland to release follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). And FSH signals your ovaries to produce about 5 to 20 follicles, which are small sacs containing immature eggs. The healthiest egg will eventually mature, and the rest are reabsorbed into the body. The maturing egg triggers a surge in estrogen that thickens the lining of your uterus – creating a nutrient-rich environment for the embryo to grow.  (Note that if you have diabetes, your blood sugar will begin to rise at the end of the follicular phase.)  Ovulation Phase Rising estrogen levels prompt your pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH), which starts the ovulation phase. (Ovulation is when your ovaries release a mature egg for fertilization.) Women are at risk for pregnancy when they’re ovulating, and they can tell that they’re ovulating by the following symptoms:  Generally, ovulation occurs on day 14 of 28 – right in the middle of your menstrual cycle. (However, the timing of your fertile window is highly unpredictable and depends on a variety of factors.) Once ovulation occurs, it lasts about 24 hours and after which, the unfertilized egg dissolves. Luteal Phase After the follicle releases its egg, it transforms into the corpus luteum. The corpus luteum releases the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which keeps the lining of your uterus thick and prepared for a potential fertilized egg.  If the egg is fertilized, your body produces human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), which maintains the corpus luteum and keeps the uterine lining thick. However, if the egg isn’t fertilized, the corpus luteum gets reabsorbed. This causes estrogen and progesterone levels to drop – which triggers the uterine lining to shed (menstruation).    During this phase, many women experience premenstrual syndrome (PMS). PMS symptoms include the following:  Common PMS Symptoms During Your Period Because every woman is different, reproductive symptoms vary from person to person. Generally, they include:  Cycle Syncing For Your Health Cycle syncing was introduced by Alisa Vitti, an integrative nutritionist and women’s hormone expert. Essentially, it involves adjusting aspects of a woman’s life — like her fitness and nutrition habits — to reflect her menstrual cycle. Doing so helps correct hormonal imbalances and minimizes symptoms.  Research confirms hormonal fluctuations affect energy, mood, appetite, and sleep. And one study linked increased consumption of sweet foods, junk food, coffee, and a lack of exercise to PMS. Should You Cycle Sync?  Dr. Becky Campbell, a functional medicine practitioner, tells us that “cycle syncing is completely safe for anyone to try.” However, it’s especially beneficial for women with the following conditions:  Exercise and Cycle Syncing A woman’s hormones and energy levels fluctuate throughout the month. And syncing your exercise routine to your menstrual phases supports your body without compromising your health.  Dr. Campell recommends planning your workouts as follows:  Nutrition and Cycle Syncing According to Dr. Campbell, different foods can affect you differently throughout your cycle. “No matter what stage you are in your cycle, avoid inflammatory foods” like refined sugar, refined oils, additives, artificial ingredients, junk food, processed food, caffeine, and alcohol. Instead, focus on consuming whole foods and eat regularly — every three to four hours — to help balance your blood sugar levels and avoid cortisol spikes. Dr. Campbell also offers these nutritional tips for each specific cycle: Natural Ways To Improve Energy During Your Next Period  You may or may not be aware of how your cycle impacts sleep. But for those who don’t know, PMS often causes sleeping problems. Women who experience PMS are twice as likely to experience insomnia either before or after their period. And poor sleep often leads to daytime grogginess and increased fatigue.  While researchers aren’t entirely sure why PMS negatively affects sleep, hormonal changes occurring around menstruation might affect body temperature and melatonin production. Changing hormone levels can cause difficulty falling asleep, as well as more sleep interruptions.  While it’s common to experience sleep troubles during your period, certain measures can help. Firstly, make sure to develop healthy sleep hygiene and optimize your night routine to improve sleep. Avoid consuming caffeine after noon, stick to a consistent bedtime, and turn electronics off at least an hour before bed.  Additionally, exercising during your period — whether it be high-intensity exercise, aerobic exercise like a brisk walk, or a feel-good yoga flow — releases endorphins and supports healthy sleep habits. It can also relieve menstrual cramps, which can help if those are the source of your insomnia, and reduce mood changes. Finally, staying hydrated and avoiding alcohol is a great way to stay energized during your cycle. Consuming a sufficient amount of fluids — including water-laden foods like fruits, vegetables, and soup — will replenish the water lost throughout the day and help maintain your energy levels.
